When it comes to brain injury… we get it!

We have been supporting the Hunter, Port Stephens and Central Coast region since 1987.

Our difference is our expertise. Headstart is a specialist service supporting the choices and independence of people with an acquired brain injury (ABI).

Brain injury is complex and can challenge every aspect of your life - movement, talking, thinking and feeling.  Even though every person might be affected differently, we understand brain injury,  the barriers and the invisible nature of the injury.

Soccer legend Craig Johnston is Headstart’s newest ambassador.

Whilst still at the top of his game playing for Liverpool, Craig received news from his parents that his sister Faye had been seriously injured.

We all thought Faye would get better but she didn’t... nobody could help. So I retired from football, it was a big decision.
— Craig Johnston, Soccer Legend & Headstart Ambassador

We understand that when a brain injury happens to someone their families are deeply impacted.

As a young woman, Teigan took on the responsibility of caring for her mum, Carolyn, who had a stroke. This role reversal was difficult at first but with Headstart's support they are now both making the most of life.

Without Headstart’s support I wouldn’t be doing much else but looking after Mum.
— Teigan, Daughter of Headstart consumer

Ben sustained an ABI from a fall, and life changed forever. His mum, Cheryl is thankful that Headstart have helped navigate a way through the challenges. Fourteen years later we still provide daily support for Ben.

They didn’t treat our son like someone with a disability. You need a service provider who understands brain injury.
— Cheryl, Mum of Headstart consumer

We support some amazing people! Watch more of their unique stories.

Our Approach:

1.  Whatever it takes -  we strive to find creative solutions that suit you.

2.  Find your strengths - discover your resilience, confidence and "can do’s".

3.  Reframe the challenge - sometimes people get stuck, and we help to look at a problem from a different angle.

4.  Learning together - believing in trial and error everyday - what works for you, and what may not.

5.  Always be growing -  getting back on track may seem a far off dream.  We join your journey to a place where brain injury doesn't define you, but your achievements and successes do.

6.  Create an environment - where you find inspiration to dream more, do more in a way  that suits you, your life and choices.
